I describe my photography style as fun, fresh and colorful. It’s a style that has evolved tremendously during the three years of JFP and I think it fits me appropriately. I believe I’m a fun, fresh and colorful person (hopefully others think the same as well!) so it’s probably natural that my photography style has turned into such. There’s so much of me in my business and I’ve learned that that’s an important trait to carry on and keep consistent. So I think the fun, fresh and colorful photography style is one for me to own and continue to improve.
As I was editing Marianne and Tripp’s wedding collection this past week, the above picture reminded me of my style. To me, the picture encompasses a fun, fresh and colorful style and represents JFP so well. A few other pictures also come to mind…
I love finding these images because it lets me know that I’m doing a good job at being true to myself and my business. I want to show a fun, fresh, colorful style of photography. I’m doing it and people are both recognizing and enjoying it. But there are a lot of photographers who are straying away from the traditional style of photography and working more towards the fun, lifestyle-like images that I produce. So I need to keep working. I need to DISTINGUISH myself even more.
A few days ago, I started reading Jose Villa’s Fine Art Wedding Photography book and was immediately inspired by just reading the preface and introduction. He talks about the photography industry’s influx of new pros who lack training and the importance of DISTINGUISHing yourself from them by creating a cohesive collection of art. While I do strive to put together cohesive collections of art for all my clients, I think this will push me even further into crafting my photography style. I’m not going to change my style, just continue to concentrate on the three words I use to describe it and introduce new ideas to keep it interesting and unique. To DISTINGUISH it from all the others. To let everyone know this is MY STYLE. I’m a fun, fresh, and colorful photographer!
FUN: something that provides mirth or amusement; enjoyment or playfulness. I want my clients to not only have fun while I’m taking their pictures, I want them to look like they’re having fun in their pictures! I want to invoke smiles, laughter and comfort.
FRESH: newly made or obtained; recently arrived; just come; new; not previously known; additional or further. I want my pictures to be clean and pretty. I want them to be sharp and appealing to the senses. I want them to display new poses and compositions.
COLORFUL: abounding in color; richly eventful or picturesque; presenting or suggesting vivid or striking scenes. I want my pictures to show as much color as possible. I want them to be beautiful and eye-catching.
